Planning the Veterans Memorial
This all started when James Lee came up with an idea to have
American flags line the street at Central Park.
Funds were raised and 68
American flags were installed. The money came from Santa Clara Disabled War
Veterans Inc.
With this done, Jim started talking with friends about a Veterans
Memorial in Central Park.
Jim and Marlys Lee, and friends Ray Gamma & Jim Ash,
went to Larry Wolfe, Director of Parks, for his support.
The Santa Clara City
Council gave their approval. Funds were raised to build the Memorial in 2001,
with ground breaking on November 11th, 2001.
Construction started in June 2002
at no cost to the city of Santa Clara.
The Santa Clara Veterans Memorial opened on Veteran's Day, November 11, 2002.
